This needs to be emphasized over and over again.

YES, the Government CAN do things, and do them well. If you like clean drinking water you will know what I am talking about. In 2012 President Obama is sure to face a Republican opponent who will argue that it is NOT the job of the Government to regulate big business, just gay lifestyles and a woman’s right to choose. That Republican Presidential contender, whoever he/she is, will be selling a dour message of how bad things are and how the government made it worse and only less government is the only answer. Of course, whenever they are in power Republicans do everything they can to make sure that every part of the government that isn’t related to the military is underfunded, inefficient and catering to the special interests they are supposed to be overseeing, and then when they are out of power they point to their own malfeasance as proof that the government doesn’t work, never mind the fact that they were the ones to fuck it up in the first place. Amnesia.

If I didn’t know from experience that they’ll find a way to fuck it all up, I’d hope the Democrats and the president would internalize this, and use it in the 2012 campaign.
